Why Can't I Relax Even When I'm Exhausted?
It's 11:47 at night.
You're bone tired.
Your brain is... replaying a conversation from yesterday. Building tomorrow's to-do list. Wondering if you forgot something important.
If you've ever typed "why can't I relax even when I'm exhausted" into Google at an hour you won't admit to... this one's for you.
You're not bad at resting.
There may be a real reason rest feels so hard.
Exhausted but can't rest? You're not broken.
I've sat with hundreds of people who look like they have it all together. Successful. Reliable. The one everyone calls.
Almost all of them tell me some version of the same thing...
"I'm so tired. But when I finally stop, I can't actually rest." "When I do rest, I feel no different. Still tired"
They sit on the couch and feel guilty. They take a day off and spend it cleaning. They go on vacation and it takes four days to unwind... right before it's time to go home. They come home to the same patterns.
That's not a character flaw. It's a pattern. And patterns can change.
Why rest can feel unsafe (even when you want it)
Somewhere along the way, a part of you learned that being "on" kept things okay. That busy meant you were successful.
Maybe you were the oldest. Maybe deemed the responsible one. The kid who noticed what needed doing before anyone asked.
Maybe being productive was how you earned approval... or how you kept chaos from happening.
You got really good doing this…. you were praised for it.
So now, when you slow down, it sounds the alarm. What are you forgetting? Who needs you? You should be doing something.
That's where the guilt comes from. The restlessness. The automatic reach for your phone.
It's not laziness. It's not a lack of discipline. It's a protective pattern doing its job a little too well.
Why a bubble bath and a day off don't fix it
Most rest advice works on the surface. Schedule downtime. Take a bath. Put your phone in another room.
You've probably tried all of it.
The problem is... you can put your body in the bath. That doesn't mean the part of you that's scanning for danger or what needs / should be done got the memo.
This is why I say overwhelm isn't a time-management problem… it’s not a coping skill problem either. You can clear your whole calendar and still feel like you're running. You can have all the nervous system regulation tools and coping skills and still not feel recharged, relaxed or grounded.
Signs you're tired in a way sleep doesn't fix
You feel guilty when you're not being productive
"Relaxing" means scrolling or watching the latest Netflix, HBO, Hulu, or whatever series while a to-do list runs in the background
You're the one everyone counts on... and almost no one checks on
You wake up tired, even after a full night of sleep
Stillness feels uncomfortable, even a little scary
If you nodded at three or more... keep reading.
How this shows up for men and women
I coach both men and women, and I see this pattern in both.
It just wears different clothes.
For a lot of women, it looks like carrying the mental load... being the one who remembers everything and never really clocks out.
For a lot of men, it sounds like "I'm fine"... pushing through, staying useful, measuring worth by how much you can handle.
Different words. Same exhaustion underneath. And the same way through.
What actually helps you rest
You can't think your way into feeling safe. If you could, you'd already be there. And when I say safe, I don't just mean safe from something big or scary. Safe isn't only the absence of danger.
It's feeling safe in yourself... settled, secure, and confident that you're okay even when you stop. No bracing for what's next.
It's the presence of you... grounded, steady, and sure you're allowed to rest.
Real change happens where the pattern actually lives... in the subconscious. Your conscious mind can know this and try to make changes but the real work happens beneath that. That's the level I work at, using tools like hypnosis, EFT tapping, NLP, and parts work. Instead of talking yourself into rest, you teach your whole system that it's allowed.
Here's something small you can try tonight.
Put a hand on your chest. Let your exhale be a little longer than your inhale. Then say, quietly, "I'm allowed to stop now."
Notice what happens. If a part of you argues back... that's not failure. That's information. That's the part we'd get to know.
Why I work differently
Yes I am a Coach but I also have a background being a Licensed Professional Counselor and Approved Clinical Supervisor with a master's from the University of Pennsylvania. For more than 16 years, I've specialized in subconscious change work.
I also know this pattern from the inside. I grew up a competitive swimmer, then ran marathons and a half Ironman. I know what it's like to be really good at pushing... and really bad at stopping. This has shown up in my career and other areas of life.
What makes my work different is simple… I don't stop at helping you understand why. I help and guide you actually feel different. A difference that last beyond our work together.
Ready to actually rest?
That's exactly why I created Rested & Centered, a 28-day virtual challenge for people who are tired of being tired.
It's not another list of tips. It's daily subconscious work that helps your mind and body finally believe it's safe to slow down.
From October 19 to November 15, you'll get a guided relaxation welcome video, plus hypnosis, subliminal, and EFT tapping audios to choose from each day. You'll check in daily with a private group doing this right alongside you, and we'll close together with a live circle on day 28. The goal isn't perfect... it's rested and centered. All for $47.
It's not just 28 days... this is a forever shift.
