I Know Why I Do It, So Why Can't I Stop? Insight vs. Change
You could write a book about your patterns.
You know where they came from. You can name them. You've journaled about them, talked about them, maybe even explained them to a friend who has the same thing.
Ye you still do them.
You still say yes when you mean no. Still overcommit. Still lie awake running through everything you didn't get to.
So you google it. "I know why I do it, so why can't I stop?"
Here's the honest answer.
Understanding why you do something and actually being able to stop doing it... live in two completely different places.
Why insight isn't the same as change
Insight lives in your conscious mind. The thinking, analyzing, problem-solving part. The part that's probably pretty impressive.
But your patterns aren't run by that part.
They're run by your subconscious... the part that learned, a long time ago, what keeps you safe, loved, and okay. It doesn't take direction from logic. It takes direction from experience.
So you can know you don't have to answer that email at 10pm. And your hand still reaches for the phone.
That's not you being weak or stubborn. That's two parts of you speaking different languages.
An ocean lesson
I race in the ocean. I can understand currents perfectly on paper. I can explain how waves break and why you swim parallel to shore in a rip.
None of that is the same as staying calm when a wave crashes over my head or the strong pull of a current.
That calm had to be built in my body. Through experience. Over and over.
Changing a pattern works the same way. Understanding is step one. It matters. But it's not the step that makes you feel different.
Signs you're stuck in the insight loop
You can explain your patterns better than anyone... and you keep repeating them
You've read the books, listened to the podcasts, taken the courses
You feel frustrated with yourself for "knowing better"
You think the answer is finding one more piece of information
Your people say "just stop doing that"... and you wish it were that easy
If this is you, please hear me. You're not failing at self-help. You're using the wrong tool for this part of the job.
Why high-achieving men and women get stuck here
This loop shows up for my clients of every gender.
The men I work with often tell me they figured they could think their way out. Solve it like any other problem.
The women often tell me they've "done all the work"... and feel like they should be further along by now.
Both are brilliant at understanding. Neither was ever shown how to go deeper than that.
How to actually stop repeating the pattern
Hundreds of clients later, here's what I've seen work.
We go to where the pattern actually lives. Not throwing another thing on your to do list. Not another system, planner, or book or podcast to work through.
Getting to the root of what drives the patter… the wiring we were built on that came from what we saw, heard, stories from others and our early experiences. These became hardwired and to undo that we need subconscious tools. Some of the subconscious change tools like hypnosis, EFT tapping, NLP, and parts work are a way to do that rewiring. Instead of arguing with the part of you that keeps doing the thing, we get curious about it. What's it protecting? What is it afraid will happen if it stops?
When that part feels heard and gets a new option, it doesn't have to fight so hard.
And the change stops feeling like willpower. It starts feeling like... you.
Try this the next time you catch yourself
The next time you notice the pattern kicking in, pause and ask:
"What is this part of me trying to protect right now?"
Don't fix anything. Just listen. You might be surprised how quickly an answer comes.
Why I do this work differently
I'm a coach who's also a Licensed Professional Counselor and Approved Clinical Supervisor, with a master's in counseling from the University of Pennsylvania. My clinical training means I deeply value insight. My coaching means I know it's not the finish line.
My work sits right in that gap... between understanding and actually feeling different. Real talk plus real tools.
