Self-Care Coaching

Takeaway: If you’re constantly falling into a cycle of overworking, crashing, and repeating, you’re not alone. However, it is possible to learn a new way of living. I’ve seen it firsthand with my own clients–and through my own personal experience. As a self-care coach, I can help you learn how to consistently attend to your own needs in a way that actually works for you. Get started today.

 Does this sound like you?

You're laser-focused on grinding your way to the top. Your work is important to you, and a lot of your self-worth comes from your career. But you spend so much time and energy dedicated to working that your other needs fall by the wayside. As a result, your relationships, mental health, and overall well-being suffer. You crash after a while and are so tapped out that you can't even relax in a meaningful way.

Or maybe you're used to always being the helper: in your job, at home, and everywhere else in your life. You love feeling needed and useful, but it's hard always putting other people's needs first. You give, give, give, and never seem to have time or energy to put toward yourself. You struggle to set boundaries with other people. When you actually do, you feel anxious or guilty, so you can't even enjoy getting what you want and need.

No matter which you identify with (maybe parts of both resonate with you), your core struggle is self-care. Of course, you understand the importance of self-care, but you struggle to actually put it into action. Most likely, you're used to trying random quick fixes that don't fully recharge you. Regardless, you feel totally drained and aren't sure what else to do. All you know is that something needs to change.

If so, you're not alone. I've been there—and come out the other side.

Unfortunately, these challenges are all too common. Culture, difficult life experiences, and other personal factors can make it hard to put our own needs first. We get stuck in a loop of pushing ourselves beyond our limits, burning out, and scrambling to catch back up. However, it's impossible to fully heal without fundamentally changing how we live.

I get it—this idea probably feels totally daunting. I've been there myself. I'm fortunate enough to have a balanced, fulfilling life now, but this wasn't always the case. Before becoming a self-care coach, I struggled with my own debilitating burnout. Thankfully, I discovered the transformative power of making my personal wellness the primary focus of my life. Now, I help my clients (and hopefully you, too!) do the same.

We're often sold the message that self-care is as bubble baths and sleeping in. While it can be that simple, it also goes so much deeper than that. It involves self-awareness, setting healthy boundaries, and reducing the baseline stress you experience in your day-to-day life.

The good news? You don't have to figure it out alone.

self care coach

Meet Abbey Sangmeister, self-care coach

Hi! I'm Abbey. Since authenticity is one of my main values, I'm going to keep it real with you: I actually hate the term "self-care." We often use it as a band-aid "solution" to avoid making the changes that will actually help us feel better. To find real self-care, I believe we need to create sustainable practices in our daily lives that create a solid, stable foundation to support our overall well-being.

This work is a true passion of mine. Before entering the coaching industry, I worked in other fields like tech and education. However, it's always been drawn to working directly with people and learning what makes them tick. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a dual master's degree, I worked as a licensed professional counselor for 13 years.

While I love being a therapist, my coaching career was born out of a desire to bring more creativity into my work with clients. I want to be able to meet you wherever you're at and find the tools that truly work for you—whatever that looks like. Coaching allows me to do just that. Together, we'll think outside the box to discover innovative solutions that can grow and change as you do.

My approach to self-help life coaching

As your self-care coach, I'll be there to guide you every step of the way. Let's be clear: I won't tell you what you need. Your personal development is just that—personal—so I collaborate with each individual client to discover what will work best for them. My tried-and-true roadmap to success allows us to create sustainable, lasting changes that are tailored to your unique situation.

During our time together, we'll get to the root of the patterns that keep you stuck in a perpetual cycle of burnout (I'm a burnout coach in addition to being a self-care coach since the two go hand in hand). For many people, this looks like not setting boundaries where needed, whether that's in your career, personal relationships, or other areas of your life.

From here, we'll explore how you can practice self-care in a consistent, sustainable way to prevent crashing altogether. We'll discover which strategies work best to support your emotional health as well as your physical health. I like to think outside the box, so get ready to get creative!

Above all, I want to help you thrive, not simply survive. You'll leave our sessions with more energy, confidence, and self-love. Through our work, you'll feel empowered to dream up your best life—and actually take the steps needed to create it. Best of all, everything you learn is set up to evolve with you as you inevitably change and grow.

Sound good? Reach out today to learn more about my approach to self-care coaching. I offer free 15-minute consultations so you can ask questions and get a better sense of how I can help. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you discover what self-care looks like for you.

Who my self-care coaching services are for

As a self care coach, I believe that most people can benefit from some extra TLC in their day-to-day lives. With that being said, I find that there are people with particular lifestyles or behavior patterns that find it extra-difficult to devote time and energy to themselves in a consistent, sustainable way. Here are some examples of who can benefit from my self care coaching services.

Burned out high-achievers

You're used to hustling your way to the top, and you're motivated by success. Yet, you've been doing this for so long that you feel totally drained. You're not sure how you can keep moving forward in the same way. Self-care coaching can help you focus on personal development outside of your career and prioritize your mental, emotional, and physical health.

entrepreneurs

As a business owner, you're used to doing it all—it's what makes you successful. However, balancing everything and always having to be "on" can take a toll. Together, we'll explore creative solutions to give you the time and energy you need to care for yourself while still running a thriving business.

Helping professionals with compassion fatigue

Helpers like therapists, coaches, teachers, and medical professionals all have the gift of compassion. But when you're constantly putting other people's needs first, you drain the inner resources that can allow you to serve others—and yourself. Self care coaching can teach you the healthy boundaries you need to find more balance in your life.

Parents, especially single parents

As a single mom by choice, I understand the stress and pressure of parenthood all too well. Of course, there are plenty of joys that come along with raising children, but it's also important to acknowledge the challenges. Working with a self help coach can empower you to prioritize your own needs, helping you feel more grounded and present in your parenting journey.

FAQs about working with a self-help coach

Most people have never worked with a self-care coach before, so it's totally normal to have questions about the process. Here, I answer some of the most frequently asked questions I hear about self-care coaching. Not seeing your question here? Contact me directly to get the answers you're looking for.

  • Each self-care coach may take a different approach. However, a good self-care coach will collaborate with you throughout the entire process to find what works best for your unique needs, values, and goals. Regardless, most coaches have the same goal: to help people learn how to bring more self-care into their daily lives.

I do that by partnering with each client to discover the barriers that keep them from taking care of themselves. For many people, that's poor work-life boundaries, people-pleasing patterns, and ideas of success that set us up for failure.

Together, we'll unpack these issues and learn how to approach life differently so you don't get stuck in burnout. By building self-care into your daily routine, you won't be left scrambling to bounce back from your latest crash. Instead, you'll have a solid foundation to support you.

As a former grinder myself, I get that letting go of the "work hard, play hard" lifestyle can feel out of reach or maybe even a little overwhelming and scary. We'll take measures to care for your emotional health during this transformation as well.

  • Self-care coaches and therapists are similar in some ways. Both types of professionals can help people learn strategies to build confidence, reduce stress, explore their feelings, and improve their mental health. However, there are also key differences to be away of.

In order to become a therapist, a person must earn a graduate degree in a field like mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, or social work. From here, they need to complete thousands of hours of supervised practice and pass an exam to earn licensure.

On the other hand, the coaching industry has fewer regulations and requirements. This means that coaches can be more flexible in how they help people. While each therapist and coach is different, self-care coaches tend to be more directive and solution-oriented than therapists. However, it's important to learn about each professional's individual approach to understand how they work.

I worked as a therapist for over a decade before I transitioned into my role as a self-care coach, so I intimately understand the nuances between the two services. If you're still unclear, I invite you to get in touch for more information about what to expect from the coaching process.

  • Unlike therapists or other types of professionals, self-care coaches don't have a certain license they need to hold that title. Since the coaching industry is less strict than other fields like therapy, all coaches (including life coaches and health coaches) have different backgrounds, education levels, and experiences.

Whether you're looking for a self-care coach, life coach, or health coach, it's important to look into their specific credentials. This can help you can understand exactly who they are and how they can help you. Coaching is more flexible and individualized than therapy, so look for whatever credentials feel important to your situation and needs.

In my case, I worked as a licensed therapist for 13 years before I made the transition into coaching. I hold a dual master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and I've also received further education through the Post Deployment Center and the Nutritional Therapy Association.

I bring this extensive education and experience to my work as a self-care coach. Plus, I draw on my lived experience as a recovered workaholic who's found balance and finally learned to enjoy life. You can learn more about my background here, and find testimonials here.
