Can't Stop Being Busy? What Productivity Guilt Is Really About
"How are you?"
"Oh, you know... busy."
You've said it a hundred times. Maybe a thousand.
And it's true. You are busy.
But here's one thing high-functioning people often call "just being busy" that I see a little differently.
Sometimes busy isn't a schedule.
It's a hiding place.
What busy can be protecting
When you're always doing, you don't have to feel.
You don't have to notice the loneliness. The grief. The question of whether you even like the life you've built.
Busy keeps all of that just out of reach.
And for a lot of people, being busy was also how they learned they mattered. Useful equals valuable. Productive equals okay.
So slowing down doesn't just feel unproductive. It feels like you might disappear.
That's a lot for a part of you to carry.
Signs busy has become a pattern
You feel guilty when you're not being productive
You fill every gap... the car, the shower, the line at the store
A free afternoon makes you a little anxious
People admire how much you get done, and you're quietly exhausted
You're not sure who you'd be if you weren't busy
How it shows up for men and women
I coach both men and women, and busy wears different outfits.
For a lot of men, it's work. Long hours, always on call, worth tied to what you provide.
For a lot of women, it's everything. Work, home, the calendar, the remembering, the holding it all together.
Different shape. Same story underneath... I'm only okay when I'm doing.
Letting go of being busy (without falling apart)
This isn't about clearing your calendar. You've probably tried that, and filled it right back up.
It's about the story underneath. The one that says you have to earn your rest. Your worth. Your place.
That's where I work as a coach, using hypnosis, EFT tapping, NLP, and parts work. When the story shifts, busy loosens on its own. You still get things done. You just stop needing to prove something by doing them.
A small experiment
This week, the next time someone asks how you are, don't say "busy."
Say one true thing instead. "Tired." "Good, actually." "Kind of a lot."
Notice what comes up when busy isn't your answer.
Why I do this work differently
I'm a coach who's also a Licensed Professional Counselor and Approved Clinical Supervisor, with a master's from the University of Pennsylvania. For 16+ years, I've helped hundreds of clients stop proving and start living.
